The theme of the Amsterdam Light festival 2024-2025 is Rituals. From 28 November until 19 January, 27 works of light art will stand in and along the Amsterdam canals. The artists, from twelve different countries, have each given their own interpretation of the theme. Sometimes the connection to the theme is clear, other times the interpretation of the theme is less obvious.
This year, the city celebrates that Amsterdam exists 750 years. Celebrations are one form of a ritual, but there are so many others. For many locals, visiting the Amsterdam Light Festival every year has become its own ritual.

Ponder the profound impact of nature on rituals, such as the electrifying power of lightning (Omen), the life-giving energy of the sun (Polaris), the mysterious influence of the moon (Mirror Moon) and the rhythmic march of the seasons (In Bloom). But also how human rituals are, such as the sharing of a meal (Spoonful), the daily commute to work (Rushhour), and the waving of hello and goodbye (Ciao!).
As you cruise through the canals remember to wish upon a star as you pass under Encounter by Vendel & de Wolf, it is a rare moment when you can see a shooting star in Amsterdam.
